Make replacement window screens when the screens are missing or the existing screens are in such disrepair that they are not salvageable. Window screens allow residents to open the windows to enjoy the fresh air and to keep bugs out.Window screens can also be made using darker screening material to block the heat and sun during hot summer months. All of the materials can be found at large home improvement stores in the windows and doors section.
Things You’ll Need:
Window screen frame pieces
Length of screen material
Spline
Roller tool for pushing screen and spline into frame
Tape measure
Tin snips or heavy duty scissors
1 Measure the window frame from the outside. Measure the height and width. Write down the numbers.
2 Gather the supplies as listed in the Things You’ll Need section.
3 Place the four frame pieces on a flat surface, such as a driveway or floor. Using the instructions that come with the pieces, lock the pieces together using the corner pieces to form a single-unit frame.
4 Unroll the sheet of screen material. Lay it over the frame so it rests in place. Cut to the screen material to roughly fit the frame. There should be some overlap on all four sides.
5 Use the roller tool to push the screen into the frame to make a groove for the spline. Push the spline over the screen and into the groove with the roller tool. Trim the screen flush with the spline so no extra screen extends past the spline.
6 Install the replacement window screen on the window.
If the window frame has a track, fit the bottom of the screen into the track first then pop the top into the frame.
If the replacement window frame fits over the entire window (not just half of the window), set the new frame in the window and push gently on all sides and corners evenly until the frame is in place. Adhere the metal frame with screws to the outside of the window frame.
Tips & Warnings
Use a smaller size spline for heavy-duty sun screen to make it easier to fit the spline in the groove.
