How to remove window screen

If you are in the process of cleaning your windows or screens, then you may need to remove the window screens. Doing it incorrectly can mean that you end up with bent frames and torn screens. Learning the correct method will save you time and a few headaches. The directions below are assuming that you are removing the screen from inside your house. Most screens cannot be removed from outside.

Things You’ll Need:
WD-40 or other lubricant
Two hands

Removing Exterior Screens

1 Look for two plunger pins around the interior edge of the screen. If you do not see plunger pins, go on to the next section.

2 Grasp each plunger pin and gently pull them towards the middle of the screen. If they do not move, use a toothbrush and some soap and water to clean around them and spray some WD-40 on the mechanism before trying again.

3 Once the plunger pins are pulled out far enough, gently push the screen frame out. Do not use too much force or you will bend the frame.

4 Spray more lubricant around the edge of the screen if you discover that it is sticking and does not want to come out.

5 Turn the screen sideways to bring the screen inside the house.

Removing Interior and Spring-based Screens

1 Screens that do not have a visible plunger pins or similar item are held in place by special springs. Look at the edges of the screen for finger lifts or routes. This will tell you that you which direction you need to push.

2 If your screen does not have any finger lifts, gently push the screen upwards and side to side. At some point, you should notice that an edge of the screen is exposed.

3 If the screen does not move at all, spray the edges with a lubricant such as WD-40 and try again.

4 Once you have determined the direction you need to push, gently push the screen in the correct direction and then outward.

5 Turn the screen sideways to bring the screen inside the house.

Tips & Warnings
If your window screen has been painted over, use a utility knife or screwdriver to remove it before removing the screen.
